If you’re one of those individuals that use ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone then you should stay far far away from updating your iPhone through iTunes. In order to update to iOS 5 and not loose your ability to unlock your iPhone you need to create a custom IPSW (firmware).

The Dev-Team have just released their latest version of RedSn0w that allows you to jailbreak the following devices:

  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad 1
  • iPhone3GS
  • iPhone4 (GSM)
  • iPhone4 (CDMA)
No iPad 2 jailbreak just yet but according to the dev-team it is currently under development.
The latest update, RedSn0w 0.9.9b5, allows you to create a custom IPSW that will not update your baseband but unfortunately it is for mac only. If you  don’t have a mac you have two options:
  • wait…
  • find a mac, either ask someone with a mac to create the custom IPSW for you or go buy a mac (waiting may be a little cheaper :T )
If you have access to a mac then follow these steps:
  • Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b5
  • Download the stock iOS 5 IPSW file for your device
  • Extract the RedSn0w zip file
  • Open the RedSn0w folder and run the application, neglect the other two files in the folder
  • Once in the application click on  ”Extras”, then “Custom IPSW”
  • Select the stock iOS 5 IPSW you downloaded and RedSn0w will start creating a “no_BB_…” (no baseband) version of the IPSW
Now it is time to actually begin update your phone.
  • Launch iTunes and make sure it is the latest 10.5 version
  • Once updated connect your iPhone
  • Cancel any prompts to update your device
  • Select your device in iTunes
  • While holding holding shift (or command button on macs) click on update
  • Select the “no_BB…” version of the IPSW created by RedSn0w
  • wait for the update to be completed

Note: there’s a special “trick” that iPhone3GS owners with baseband 06.15 need for iOS5.  During the new setup screens you see when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services.  Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked!  Later on in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”.  It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).

Once updated just use RedSn0w to jailbreak your iPhone
Once Cydia is on your device search for ultrasn0w within the application on your phone
You should be successfully jail broken and unlocked
